The 7th Global Forum on Reinventing Government took place at the Vienna International Conference Centre from 26 to 29 June 2007. This Forum was considered to be the biggest such gathering on governance. It was organized as part of a UN system-wide partnership led by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, in cooperation with several partners organized within an Institutional Partners Group. The IPU was a member of this Group. The Government of Austria was also co-operating in the organization of the event.
The Forum's theme "Building Trust in Government" was chosen on the premise that governments must earn the trust of citizens by strengthening popular participation in the policy process, by promoting cohesion between communities and by practicing transparent, accountable and effective governance.
As a prelude to the Global Forum itself, the IPU, in co-operation with the Austrian Parliament, organized a one-day Parliamentary Forum on 25 June that provided an opportunity for the parliamentarians attending the Global Forum to express their views and share experiences on matters related to governance.
On 28 and 29 June 2007 a capacity-building workshop on "Improving the Quality of the Electoral and Parliamentary Process" took place, in co-operation with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES).
