Voters in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) went to the polls on 3 August 2003 to elect the deputies of the 11th Supreme People's Assembly. Elections for the People's Assemblies at all other levels (provincial, city and county) were also conducted across the country.
The Supreme People's Assembly is the top legislative body in the DPRK and has the mandate to elect members of the National Defense Commission.
According to a report by the Central Election Committee, 99.9 per cent of the registered voters throughout the country cast ballots. Mobile ballot boxes were provided to those who were not able to go to the polls due to illness or old age.
Most polling booths were decorated with national flags and posters saying "Let's participate in the voting for deputies to the People's Assembly and give our support to them!"
Each of the country's 687 constituencies had just one candidate selected by the ruling Korean Workers' Party. All of the candidates were successfully elected, including Kim Jong Il, leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), who received 100 per cent of the votes in his constituency.
On 3 September 2003, the first session of the 11th Supreme People's Assembly re-elected leader Kim Jong Il as Chairman of the National Defence Commission of the DPRK.
