The Committee on Human Rights, Minorities and Religious Affairs was created in 1990 (recreated in 2006). Its Sub-Committee on Gender Equality was established on 14 June 2003. |
Membership |
Members of the Committee and the Sub-Committee are elected for four years, upon nomination by the parties. The Committee consists of 24 members; the Sub-Committee consists of 6 members. The Chairperson of the Sub Committee is a woman.
Composition by sex:
(a) Committee: 17 men (71%), 7 women (29%);
(b) Sub-Committee: 3 men (50%), 3 women (50%) |
Working methods |
The Standing Committee on Human Rights, Minorities, Civil and Religious Affairs is a normal parliamentary committee. The Committee has its own Rules of Procedure and its own agenda. Generally, its sessions are open to the public. The Committee has the power to organize inquiries and hearings, and can summon government officials. Its decisions are based on a majority vote. Unlike the Committee, the Sub-Committee has no powers. |
Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
The Committee on Human Rights, Minorities, Civil and Religious Affairs has connections with similar parliamentary committees in other countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia). In 2005, the Sub-Committee on Gender Equality invited Romania's Parliamentary Committee on Equal Opportunities for Men and Women. |
Relations with external bodies |
The Committee and Sub-Committee enjoy good relations with the government and the Ombudsmen (they participate in Committee sessions). When the Committee has to discuss its annual budget, it invites national human rights bodies and non-governmental organizations. |
Subjects dealt with |
Equality between men and women, and modification of the new Hungarian law on gender indifferent areas, such as education. |
