Mandate The Committee has a one-year term, renewable at the start of the Senate's first regular session each year. It is concerned with social issues, including those relating to the status of women and gender equality. The Committee is authorized by law to propose legislation to improve the status of women and to debate related topics.
Membership The Committee comprises 7 senators who chose to become members of this particular body. Senators can amend their committee membership at the start of the Senate's first regular session each year. Composition by sex: 4 men (57.1 %), 3 women (42.9 %).
Working methods Officers of the Senate can submit draft legislation to the Committee, and the Committee itself can select issues for placement on its agenda. The Committee conducts its deliberations as it deems proper, subject to the Constitution and the laws. Committee sessions are generally not open to the public, although ministers can attend them, but they do not have the right to vote. The Committee can hear any person whose testimony is considered necessary. Decisions are taken by consensus or, when necessary, by a vote. The Committee reports to the officers of the Senate and can defend its reports in the plenary.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee collaborates closely with the Senate's permanent and other committees. Officers receive Committee reports and regularly monitor the progress of its work.
Relations with external bodies The Committee can conduct investigations to ascertain how government agencies address issues related to the condition of women and equality between the sexes. It can also make recommendations for consideration by the Senate.
Subjects dealt with Since the beginning of the legislative session in October 2005, the Committee has addressed a number of issues, including draft copyright legislation, mutual benefit societies, participation in Sexual Violence Awareness Week, and matters connected to the presence of women in institutions.
