The Committee is composed of 25 Members of Parliament, reflecting the numerical strength of the various political parties represented in the legislature, and a Clerk, who is the administrator of the Committee.

Working methods |
Normally, the Committee's deliberations are held in camera. The Committee has the power to conduct on-site enquiries and to summon government officials, civil society stakeholders, victims of human rights abuse and representatives of non-governmental organizations working on the welfare of women and children in particular to appear before it. At the end of its deliberations, the Committee makes statements on the issues and reports to Parliament as a whole. |
Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
The Committee has oversight responsibility with regard to the State bodies in charge of women and children. It enjoys working relations with the parliamentary Committees on Health, Local Government and Rural Development, Manpower Development, Youth and Employment, and Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. |
Relations with external bodies |
The Committee liaises with the country's various ministries, departments and agencies, as well as with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, CIDA, CPA, FIDA, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the Parliament of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and other organizations working on issues concerning women, children and human matters. The Committee is also part of the national gender machinery. |
