Mandate Fields of competence: a) Policy on youth (youth affairs) with the youth being the age group at highest risk; b) Social affairs and non-discrimination; c) Drug addiction, specifically its relation to the HIV/AIDS problem and young people.
Membership Members are elected by the plenary for an indefinite term following the nominations submitted by the parliamentary groups.
Working methods Committee sessions are public and are announced on the official website of the parliament. The Committee may hold hearings, inquiries and may summon government officials.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee cooperates with other parliamentary committees through the common committee session that features a common agenda. Plans are underway to establish a subcommittee on youth affairs.
Relations with external bodies The Committee cooperates extensively with the government, the Ombudsman and certain non-governmental organizations. They attend Committee meetings and Committee members may direct their queries to them.
Subjects dealt with The European Year of Equal Opportunities for All (2007). The Committee had a successful meeting on 8 February 2007 in the European Parliament about this event.
