Date of creation The Committee was established by virtue of a parliamentary decision taken by each legislature following elections
Last renewal date
Mandate The Committee has a threefold mandate: oversee government action in the area of women's issues; examine problems facing women; and draft legislation and bring legislative motions on this topic. It is also involved in wide-ranging international activities: it carries out visits to fellow parliamentarians in other parliaments and governments of other countries; it attends meetings of international organizations and participates in international UN, IPU, Council of Europe and EU meetings, among others. For purposes of examining women's issues, the following subcommittees were set up under this legislature: one to follow up enforcement of the Act on gender-based violence and another to examine legislation on voluntary interruption of pregnancy.
Membership The committee has 26 members. Composition by sex: 6 men (23.1%), 20 women (76.9%)
Working methods The Committee works in the same way as any other Committee in the Spanish Parliament. First, the parliamentarians/parliamentary groups bring motions. Second, the Committee bureau decides on which motions to accept, submits them to the Committee and records them in the agenda. The Committee bureau and the spokesperson for each parliamentary group represented on the Committee deliberate on the motions they wish to deal with and vote on at the next sitting of the Committee, with the bureau taking the final decision. Lastly, the Committee meets to debate the agreed issues and, where necessary, put them to a vote. The Committee's sittings are public and the records of each meeting are published. The Committee has a Secretary and a Legal Counsel. It enjoys the other common services provided by the Chambers.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies Relations with other parliamentary bodies are not subject to any specific formalities.
Relations with external bodies Relations with external bodies are not subject to any specific formalities.
Subjects dealt with Prostitution; equal opportunity; balancing personal, professional and family life; gender-based violence; rural women; voluntary interruption of pregnancy, etc.
