The Committee deals with all questions related to health, social security, population, labour, professional relations, family affairs and the environment. |
| Membership |
The Committee is elcted by the Chamber of Deputies at the beginning of every yearly session. It is composed of 15 members, including its Chairperson, Rapporteur and Assistant Rapporteur. |
| Working methods |
The Committee is convened by the Speaker of the Chamber or by its Chairperson.
The Speaker of the Chamber presents the Committee with bills to be examined.
In principle, the Committee's work is not public, unless the Speaker decides otherwise.
The Committee Chairperson prepares a statement for the press.
Decision are taken by majority vote, with the quorum being the majority of Committee members.
The Committee may set up a working group to examine or follow up a particular question.
It may hold hearings with government ministers and any other persons whose opinion is deemed to be useful.
It may organize a field trip to heath and social establishments in various regions throughout the country.
After each visit, it draws up a report containing its observations and recommendations, which are then conveyed to the members of the Chamber as well as the related ministries.

| Relations with other parliamentary bodies |
To mark the end of its work, the Committee submits a report to the Speaker of the Chamber. This report is subsequently presented to the plenary.
The Committee may hold a joint meeting with one or several other committees; that meeting is presided over by the Speaker of the Chamber or the Committee Chairperson responsible for drawing up the report.

It may request a hearing with government ministers, experts and any other person belonging to civil society whose opinion it deems to be useful. |
| Subjects dealt with |
During the 2007 budget review, a debate was held between Committee members and the Minister for Public Health about developing a plan to combat AIDS in order to stabilize the epidemiological situation and strengthen prevention programmes.
In addition, the Committee recently examined a bill on communicable diseases, which includes notably anonymous screening and the provision of care to patients by the health authorities.
This bill was passed by the Chamber on 12 February 2007.
