HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS IN MYANMAR ADOPTED AS EMERGENCY ITEM AT 117TH IPU ASSEMBLY
At the 117th PU Assembly, which opened today in Geneva, legislators from 125 countries adopted an emergency agenda item entitled The urgent need to immediately stop the widespread human rights violations and to restore the democratic rights of the people of Myanmar. The item was submitted by the delegation of Indonesia, with the support of the United Kingdom delegation, and received a two-thirds majority of the votes (898 votes in favour).
An item entitled Supporting Iraq’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, submitted by the delegation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, with the support of the delegation of Bahrain, was defeated (672 votes in favour).
Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 147 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
