123RD IPU ASSEMBLY TO DISCUSS INTERNATIONAL RELIEF EFFORTS FOR FLOOD-STRICKEN PAKISTAN

At the 123rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which opened today at the Geneva International Conference Centre (CICG), legislators from 123 countries adopted an emergency item entitled: Immediate action to support international relief efforts in response to natural disasters, in particular with regard to flood-stricken Pakistan.

The supplementary item was endorsed by the 488 MPs attending the Assembly, among them 25 Speakers of Parliament and 155 women parliamentarians. The item was an amalgamated version of proposals submitted by the United Arab Emirates and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Assembly also endorsed a declaration made by IPU President Gurirab about recent events in Ecuador: “I would like to state in the most unequivocal terms before this Assembly, and I believe I can say this on behalf of us all, that the IPU condemns the use of force against President Rafael Correa and wholeheartedly repudiates the recent threat to subvert constitutional order in the country”.

“We reiterate our support for and defence of the institution of parliament. The subversion of constitutional democracy and the defiance of the rule of law, which in this case has resulted in tragic loss of life, can never be condoned”, said the IPU President.

The IPU Assembly continues until Wednesday.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 155 affiliated parliaments and eight regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
