WOMEN SPEAKERS OF PARLIAMENT TO FOCUS ON COMBATING VIOLENCE AGAINST GIRLS
The Inter-Parliamentary Union will hold two events at United Nations Headquarters in New York:
- on 1 March, a debate between parliamentarians from around the world, in order to provide input for the deliberations of the 51st Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW);
- on 2 March, a meeting of women speakers of parliament who will define a common position for protecting future generations of girls from violence.
The first meeting, entitled Parliamentary Perspective on Discrimination and Violence against the Girl Child, will take place on Thursday, 1 March, in the ECOSOC chamber (from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.). It will address the role of parliament, and the difference it can make, in putting an end to violence and discrimination against girls. Presentations will be made by members of parliament, UNICEF representatives and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
The meeting will be opened by the Vice-President of the IPU Executive Committee and Vice-Chairperson of the National Council of Namibia, Mrs. Margareth Mensah-Williams, on behalf of the IPU President, Mr. Pier Ferdinando Casini, and the Director of the United Nations Division for the Advancement of Women, Mrs. Carolyn Hannan. Ms. Rima Salah, UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, will deliver the key note address.
Violence against girls will also be the theme of the third Annual Meeting of Women Speakers of Parliament, which will be held on Friday, 2 March 2007 (from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), in Room 8 of United Nations headquarters. The role of women leaders in protecting and empowering the next generation of women will be introduced by experts such as UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman and several other women speakers.
A press conference will be held on Thursday, 1 March, at 11 a.m. at the UN Headquarters Press room.
Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 148 affiliated parliaments and seven regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
