IPU PRESIDENT APPEALS FOR CLIMATE AGREEMENT

The President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, issued an urgent call to the leaders of United Nations Member States due to meet at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of Parties in Copenhagen in December to rise to the historic challenge of concluding an agreement on combating climate change.

Speaking at a meeting of Speakers of Parliament held at the United Nations in New York to prepare for the 3rd World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in 2010, Dr. Theo-Ben Gurirab, who is also Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia, called for an agreement that was comprehensive, equitable and fair. The IPU President appealed to parliamentary leaders worldwide to exert their powers of leadership in pursuit of a global accord to preserve our common environment. “The urgency of this appeal cannot be overstated” he said.

Established in 1889 and with its Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the IPU, the oldest multilateral political organisation, currently brings together 152 affiliated parliaments and eight regional assemblies as associate members. The world organisation of parliaments has an Office in New York, which acts as its Permanent Observer at the United Nations.
