IPU has welcomed as a major achievement an historic agreement under which Iran has agreed to curb its nuclear activities in return for the lifting of international sanctions.

The accord, announced in the Austrian capital, Vienna, is the culmination of nine years of negotiations between Iran and six world powers - the US, Russia, China, UK, France, and Germany.  It ends years of stalemate on an issue that has fuelled global tensions and divisions.

The breakthrough deal paves the way for greater peace and stability in the region and in international relations. It will also help reduce tensions over the nuclear issue.

A “roadmap” agreement to resolve outstanding issues was similarly signed between the International Atomic Energy Agency and Iran.

Iran had always insisted that its nuclear research was for civilian purposes, but critics feared it could use the process to develop technology for a nuclear weapon.
IPU is strongly committed to a nuclear weapons-free world, conflict resolution and peace-building.

“The agreement is a tribute to the leadership, vision and courage of all those involved in making it happen and is the result of a commitment to dialogue. Peace is best achieved through political dialogue involving all voices,” says IPU President Saber Chowdhury.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is the global organization of national parliaments. It works to safeguard peace and drives positive democratic change through political dialogue and concrete action.
