International consensus on a political rather than a military solution to the Syrian conflict must be found urgently, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has urged.
“There can be no military solution to the Syrian conflict. Such a path can only lead to greater bloodshed when so much has been spilled already,” IPU President Abdelwahad Radi said. “It is imperative, now more than ever, that there is the political will to end the conflict in a peaceful way.”
IPU and its 162 member parliaments have repeatedly called for dialogue between all concerned parties to end the violence that has killed an estimated 100,000 people and forced more than two million Syrians to flee the country.
Welcoming the decision by the British parliament on a crucial vote on the Syrian conflict, President Radi said it showed what parliaments around the world could do to press for an alternative to guns and bombs in bringing peace.
