The seminar is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and will take place on 7 October 2010 at International Conference Centre Geneva (CICG). It primarily targets members of parliaments of those States parties to the Convention whose reports were considered by the CEDAW Committee during the course of 2010 and or will be considered at the beginning of 2011.
This year, the seminar will focus on the theme “Legislating for Women’s Rights”. Specific attention will be given to the definition of discrimination, to mainstreaming gender in the legislative process and to monitoring laws and their enforcement. The seminar will also deal with the role of parliaments in implementing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and in particular on ways and means of enhancing cooperation between the CEDAW Committee, National Parliaments and the IPU. Several experts, including a member of the Committee, a member of the Committee’s Secretariat and a member of parliament with experience in this field, will facilitate the seminar.
