The seventh in a series of regional meetings held by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and UNICEF, the regional workshop targeted parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean and regional inter-parliamentary organizations and was held in Lima from 7 to 8 June 2013, at the invitation of the Congress of the Republic of Peru.
The aim of the regional workshop was to help the parliaments of Latin America and the Caribbean contribute to the improvement of birth registration systems, paying particular attention to the persistent discrepancies between rural and urban areas, rich and poor and different racial and ethnic groups. The workshop’s aim is that children are registered immediately after birth, in accordance with the commitment made by countries in the region.
Parliamentarians will have an opportunity to consider the problems related with birth registration and learn from colleagues and experts about specific examples of how parliaments, by passing legislation, conducting oversight, preparing budgets and representing the people, could contribute to the improvement of birth registration systems.
The proceedings were conducted in Spanish, English and French.
