As part of its campaign Parliaments Take Action on Violence against Women, IPU is organizing jointly with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) a regional conference entitled “Migration and Violence against Women in Europe”. This Conference, which hosted by the French National Assembly, will be held in Paris on 10 and 11 December 2009 in the Salle Lamartine.
The meeting is intended for the Member Parliaments of the IPU’s Twelve Plus Group. It is also open to PACE’s Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men and its Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population.
Women are particularly exposed to violence at all stages of migration. The Conference aims to inform European parliamentarians about the causes of that heightened vulnerability of migrant women to gender-based violence and identify responses to ensure respect for their fundamental rights. The proceedings will focus on international and regional human rights instruments dealing with violence against women, human trafficking, the rights of migrant women and refugee status. The Conference will also provide an opportunity to explore various forms of international cooperation to combat violence against women in the context of migration.
