PARLIAMENTARY MEETING ON THE OCCASION OF UNCTAD X Bangkok, 10 - 11 February 2000

	In conformity with the decision taken by the Inter-Parliamentary Council at its 165th session (Berlin, October 1999), the Parliamentary Meeting on the occasion of the tenth session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD X) took place on 10 and 11 February 2000 on the premises of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok. It was organised by the IPU and the Thai National Assembly in cooperation with the UNCTAD Secretariat. The meeting was open to all MPs attending the UNCTAD X session as part of their national delegations, as well as to any other MPs delegated by their IPU National Groups to take part in the parliamentary event. Participation in the meeting permitted them to obtain first-hand information about the main issues and thrusts of the intergovernmental Conference, to contribute to the elaboration of parliamentary recommendations to UNCTAD X, and to establish contacts that could be pursued in the course of consultations between national delegations. Participants exchanged views with respect to strategies for effective follow-up to UNCTAD X at the parliamentary level. At its final session, the Meeting unanimously adopted a Declaration which was subsequently transmitted to UNCTAD X.
