Mandate The Committee may consider any trade-related issues; examine of any international treaty (multi or bilateral) entered into by New Zealand; consider any domestic legislation that implements trade agreements; review the operation and performance of government agencies with operational responsibilities for trade.
Membership The Committee is created for the duration of each parliamentary term (approximately three years). The current Committee was established on 7 November 2005. The number of members on the Committee varies from parliament to parliament. The membership of the Committee is determined by the respective party caucuses (i.e. of political parties represented in the Parliament). Those committee members are members for the duration of the parliamentary term.
Working methods The Committee sets its own agenda. It considers business referred to it by the Parliament, and it also considers matters of its own volition. The Committee may conduct proceedings in private and in public. It may request briefings from relevant officials, such as from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Committee's reports become public documents after the report is presented to the Parliament.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee interacts with the Parliament by way of its written reports. The Committee also meets with overseas delegations.
Relations with external bodies The Committee may call for public submissions on the various areas of business before it. The Committee does not attend negotiating forums.
Subjects dealt with The Committee has recently examined a series of significant bilateral and multilateral economic agreements.
