Parliament name (generic / translated) Assembleia nacional / National Assembly
Structure of parliament Unicameral
BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 31 August 2012
Purpose of elections The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola led by President José Eduardo dos Santos won the elections, taking 175 of the 220 seats in the National Assembly. It promised to continue the reconstruction of the country destroyed by the 1975 - 2002 civil war. The MPLA's victory automatically renewed Mr. dos Santos - in power since 1979 - as President for another five-year term (see note).

The main opposition National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), led by Mr. Isaias Samakuva, took 32 seats and its splinter Convergence Angola Salvation Wide-Electoral Coalition (Casa-CE) took eight. The UNITA, which had called in vain for the postponement of the elections - citing lack of transparency in the electoral process - claimed electoral fraud; an allegation dismissed by the Election Commission.

Note:
The 2010 Constitution discontinued direct presidential elections. Article 109 stipulates "the individual heading the national list of the political party or coalition of political parties which receives the most votes in general elections shall be elected President of the Republic and Head of the Executive". The term of the National Assembly in the 2010 Constitution is five years; previously it was four.
