Purpose of elections The March 2012 parliamentary elections were the first to be held under President Mauricio Funes, who himself had been elected in March 2009 for a five-year term. Since 2010, his Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) formed a parliamentary alliance with the Grand Alliance for National Unity (GANA), a party formed by dissidents of the National Republican Alliance (ARENA). In the 2012 elections, the FMLN promised social programmes and job creation. The ARENA, led by former President Alfredo Cristiani, pledged tougher policies against crime and youth gangs. Although the ARENA became the largest party with 33 seats, President Funes' FMLN and its parliamentary ally, the GANA, took a total of 42 seats. The FMLN also receives support in parliament from smaller parties on certain issues.
