BACKGROUND |
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) (from/to) | 10 June 2012 17 June 2012 |
Purpose of elections |
The Socialist Party (PS) and its close allies won an absolute majority, taking 314 of the 577 seats. In May, Mr. Francois Hollande (PS) had become President, defeating the incumbent, Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy of the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). The UMP took 194 seats in the National Assembly. The far-right National Front (FN) won parliamentary representation for the first time since 1997, with 2 seats.
Following a reduction in the age of eligibility from 23 to 18 years old, a 22 year-old woman from the FN became the youngest member of the National Assembly since the founding of the Fifth Republic in 1958. A record 155 women were elected, up from 107 in 2007. The increase was a consequence of the PS's victory. The PS fielded 45% women candidates, whereas only 30% of UMP candidates were women. For the first time, 11 members were elected to represent French people overseas. |
