Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU), won a total of 311 seats in the 631-member Bundestag, their best result since reunification in 1990. However, the CDU-CSU remained five seats short of an absolute majority, and its junior coalition partner in the outgoing government - the Free Democratic Party (FDP) did not surpass the 5-per-cent threshold to win parliamentary representation. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) remained the second largest party in parliament, winning 193 seats.
During the election campaigning, the CDU-CSU focused on growth and budgetary discipline, promising to reduce public debt and increase spending without raising taxes. The SPD, with Mr. Peer Steinbrück as its candidate for Chancellor, promised to introduce a minimum wage of 8.50 euros per hour. It also pledged to raise taxes for the rich and fight against tax evasion.
The CDU-CSU began discussions with both the SPD and the Greens about the formation of a possible coalition government. |
