BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 17 June 2012
Purpose of elections The failure to form a government after the elections in May 2012 led to new elections in June. The New Democrats (ND) came in first again, increasing their share from 108 to 129 of the 300 seats at stake. On 20 June, ND leader Antonis Samaras was sworn in as Prime Minister to lead a three-party coalition government comprising the ND, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK, 33 seats) and the Democratic Left (DA, 17 seats). The government expressed support for loans received from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund to help the country out of its on-going financial and economic crisis, but pledged to try to renegotiate some of the loan agreement's austerity measures.

The Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) came second in the elections again, rising from 52 to 71 seats. SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras rejected the terms of the bailout loans but insisted that the country should stay in the Eurozone.
