BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 25 January 2015
Purpose of elections The Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) led by Mr. Alexis Tsipras won the elections by a clear margin, more than doubling its presence to take 149 seats in the 300-member Parliament. Prime Minister Antonis Samaras' New Democracy (ND) came in a distant second with 76 seats. Following the elections, President Karolos Papoulias tasked Mr. Tsipras with forming a government. The new government, comprising SYRIZA and the right-wing Independent Greeks (AnEl, 13 seats), was sworn in on 26 January.

The early elections were triggered by three unsuccessful rounds of voting in parliament for a new president which, under the Constitution , automatically leads to the dissolution of parliament. The campaign focused on the economy, in particular whether or not to continue the austerity measures associated with the country's EUR 240 billion bailout agreements with the European Union, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. SYRIZA leader Tsipras pledged to re-negotiate the conditions of the bailout programme and abolish many of the austerity measures. Prime Minister Samaras said such re-negotiation could lead to an impasse with the EU and force the country to leave the eurozone.
