Seven women were indirectly elected in 2008 bringing the total number of elected women MPs to 21. There are two women among the appointed members or 23 women in all.
As at September 2008 there were two vacant seats. They will be filled by indirect elections in November 2008.
Three members appointed by the President belong to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bringing the party's strength in the Council of States to 53 members.
