Purpose of elections |
The People's Democratic Party "Nur Otan", led by President Nursultan Nazarbayev, took 83 of the 98 seats at stake. Two other pro-presidential parties took the remainder, surpassing the 7-per-cent threshold to enter parliament. The President's party had won all the 98 seats in the previous elections held in August 2007. The early elections took place after 53 parliamentarians from the ruling party signed an appeal to the President, calling for a new parliament and government due address the economic difficulties triggered by the euro crisis. |
