Purpose of elections |
The 2013 mid-term elections were held to renew 10 seats in the 14-member Congress for a two-year term. Since there are no political parties in Micronesia, all candidates stood as independents and campaigned on local issues. Three outgoing members, including Speaker Isaac V. Figir, were re-elected unopposed. The sole woman candidate was defeated by an incumbent member.
In August 2012, the Speaker proposed four constitutional amendments. One of them (Congressional Bill 17-147) aimed at creating four additional at-large seats for women in the Congress, but the amendments had not been adopted prior to the 2013 elections. The new legislature, like the outgoing one, does not comprise any women. |
