| Purpose of elections |
Elections were held for all the seats in the National Council on the normal expiry of the members' term of office. Regional councils elections are held on 7 December 2004 to elect regional councilors from which each regional council elects two councilors to represent its region on the National Council. |
Elections of Regional Councils were held on 29-30 November 2004. Out of the 107 constituencies for the Regional Councils
SWAPO won 96; UDF 5; NUDO 3; DTA 2
and South West African National Union (SWANU) one constituency. The other contestants - Congress of Democrats (COD)
Republican Party (RP) and Namibia Democratic Movement for Change (NDMC) - failed to win any single constituency. The elected councilors were sworn in by a magistrate within seven days of the release of the results.
The regional councils then met on different dates to elect regional governors and the two national councilors from each of the country's 13 regions: 26 seats in all. SWAPO won 24 seats. DTA and UDF obtained one seat each. Members of the 3rd National Council were sworn in on 7 December 2004. |
