Note:
The 18th amendment to the Constitution, which came into force in April 2010, reserved four seats for non-Muslim minorities (one member per province), thereby increasing the statutory number of members of the Senate from 100 to 104. The amendment was first applied to the half-renewal of the Senate, held on 2 March 2012. Two of the four non-Muslim senators elected in 2012 will serve a three-year term, while two others will serve a six-year term.
Half of the seats renewed on 2 March 2012 were as follows:
- 12 seats in each of the country's four provinces (7 general seats; two seats reserved for women, two seats reserved for technocrats and ulemas or religious leaders, and one for a non-Muslim minority);
- 4 general seats in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATAs, located along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border); and
- 2 seats (reserved for technocrats and ulemas) in the federal capital. |
