A record 16 parties and four independent candidates won parliamentary representation, creating a fragmented 52-member Parliament. Former Prime Minister Edward Natapei's Vanua'aku Pati (VP) came in first with eight seats, followed by caretaker Prime Minister Sato Kilman's Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) which took six. No women were elected.
During the election campaign, the VP promised to conduct a study into setting up a health insurance scheme, while the PPP pledged to enact a law to protect the rights of disadvantaged groups.
On 19 November, Mr. Kilman defeated Mr. Natapei in the premiership elections in Parliament by 29 to 23 votes. The new Prime Minister formed a coalition government comprising nine parties, which had taken a total of 27 seats (see "Names of Parties in government" below) and several independent members. |
