Structure of parliament Unicameral
BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 16 March 2014
Purpose of elections The coalition called "Future We Believe In - Aleksandar Vucic" led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), won 158 of the 250 seats at stake, thereby becoming the first electoral coalition in Serbia to secure an absolute majority in parliament. "Ivica Dacic - SPS-PUPS-US" coalition led by outgoing Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, came in a distant second, taking 44 seats. The Democratic Party - an opposition party led by former Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas - and the New Democratic Party - Greens, led by former President Boris Tadic, followed with 19 and 18 seats respectively.

President Tomislav Nikolic had called early parliamentary elections upon SNS' request. The latter argued that it needed a stronger mandate to accelerate reforms. During the election campaign, outgoing Deputy Prime Minister Vucic (SNS), promised to implement economic reforms, fight corruption and continue Serbia's talks on EU membership. Socialist Party leader Dacic said his party would oppose the reforms which targeted workers and the retired. The Democratic Party promised to "bar the way to populism". Mr. Tadic - who had left the Democratic Party and formed the New Democratic Party in January 2014 - promised to work for the modernization of Serbia and establishment of a lasting peace in the Western Balkans.
