Purpose of elections After becoming the largest party in the People's Assembly, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) won a clear majority in the Shoura Assembly. The FJP was formed by the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), which had been banned under the former regime. The FJP and its allies won 106 of the 180 directly elected seats. The Salafist Al-Nur party took 45 seats while Wafd and the Egyptian Bloc took 14 and eight seats respectively. An additional 90 members are due to be appointed by Egypt's next president, expected to be elected by June 2012.
