- In August 2004 275 members were appointed by the principal Somali clans and sub-clans on the basis of an agreement made in Nairobi in 2004.
- Based on a peace agreement signed in Djibouti in November 2008 the statutory number of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP) has been increased from 275 to 550 members. 200 of the 275 newly-created seats were allotted to members representing the Islamist Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) while the remainder went to members from civil society including opposition groups not represented in the ARS. Most of the 200 ARS members were sworn in on 28 January 2009. As at 22 June 2010 there were 546 members of whom 37 were women.
- On 29 January 2009 in line with the 2008 peace agreement the expanded TFP voted to extend its term by two years through August 2011.
- Based on the Kampala Accord of June 2011, the term of the TFP has been extended to August 2012.
