Mandate The Committee examines all matters relating to gender and children; ensures that concerns of women and children are included in all appropriate legislation; and reports to the House on any proposals to enhance affirmative action.
Membership The Committee is composed of 25 members nominated to reflect the numerical strength of the various parties represented in the House.
Working methods The Committee meets to deliberate on the human rights of women and children; to make on-site enquiries; and to meet members of district assemblies, regional ministers and local communities in order to make them conscious of the effects of violations of human rights on victims, and the need for penalties for such violations.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies Joint Committee meetings and workshops on laws affecting women and children; joint activities with the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development and the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation.
Relations with external bodies The Committee shares certain oversight responsibilities with the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs, and with UNICEF, UNFPA, UNDP, some NGOs and some donor agencies.
Subjects dealt with Female genital mutilation; Trokosi, a type of slavery to atone for the sins of one's ancestors (the girl child is usually the victim); harmful widowhood rites, rape, child abuse, child trafficking, child labour, child pornography and sex slavery.
