Mandate As a standing committee, the Economic Committee can take initiatives, make proposals, give options and participate in the supervision of the functioning of the Government. In the cases set forth in the law or the Standing Orders of Parliament, the Committee may take part in the law-making process (e.g. the ratification process of multilateral, regional and bilateral trade agreements; in the debate of reports on the free-trade policy) and exercising control over the Government. As a parliamentary body, the Committee may request for information on issues related to the international trade policy.
Membership The 28 members of the Committee are elected by the plenary of the Parliament for four years.
Working methods During the session of the Parliament, the Committee holds regular sittings. The meetings/sittings of the Committee are convened by the Chairperson. The written invitation contains the proposal for the agenda. Items are selected by the agenda of the plenary session and some of them are selected by the proposals of the Committee members or by the Committee's own decision. The final agenda of the sitting Committee is determined by the Committee itself. Before his/her appointment and a least once a year, the Committee shall hear the minister concerned. Under the Standing Orders, at the request of two-fifths of the Committee members, the Committee may hold a hearing. The Committee sittings are open to the press and registered national interest groups and social organizations may take part in the sittings by invitation. The Committee may request information about international trade matters from government reports, Government officials, interest groups, social organizations and experts. Certain issues of international trade are debated by the subcommittees of the Economic Committee (e.g. subcommittee monitoring the implementation and socio-economic impact of laws within the sphere of competence of the Economic Committee; the European integration subcommittee, and the subcommittee on enterprise development, industry and trade).
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee may produce information material on its statements regarding the oversight of executive action or any other issues falling within its competence. This information material is sent to the Speaker, the parliamentary committees and the leaders of the parliamentary groups, and is made available to the members of parliament. Subcommittees send their proposals to the main committee.
Relations with external bodies Relationship with Government: the Committee participates in the supervision of Government action; the Committee may request information from Government officials; the Committee may hear the minister (whom it heard before his/her appointment) at least once per year. Relationship with civil society: interest groups and social organizations may take part in the Committee and subcommittees sittings by invitation. They can send their opinion or advice to the Committee or subcommittees.
Subjects dealt with Recently, the Committee dealt with the issues of energy policy and transport policy.
