| Mandate |
The Committee is responsible for legislative affairs as well as gender issues and the promotion of women. It seeks to uphold fundamental principles established in the Constitution, including equality between women and men, as well as in Art. 38 of the Senate's internal rules. |

The Committee has seven members. The Chair and Vice-Chair are elected by the plenary of the Senate. The Committee's other members are chosen by the Officers of the Senate on the basis of criteria established in the Senate's internal rules.

| Working methods |
As a technical body of the Senate working on behalf of the plenary, the Committee meets in public and can organize investigative or fact-finding missions and hold hearings to question government authorities. Decisions are based on a vote.

The Committee works closely with the Committee on Social Affairs on matters pertaining to social welfare and the family. |

The Committee works with the Ministry for Gender Affairs and Promotion of the Family and, in the future will do so with the to-be-established gender observatory. |

Respect for the principle of equality between women and men as reflected by the apportionment to women of at least 30 per cent of decision-making positions in political parties, judicial bodies, and decentralized agencies. |
