Membership The Committee has 14 members (4 women and 10 men). Members of parliament sign up for the Committee and their appointment is confirmed by a body of the National Assembly Bureau. The Bureau has three members (Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary) elected by the members of the Committee by secret ballot. Their term is for one year, renewable at each session of parliament.
Working methods The topics are drawn up by the Committee Bureau, discussed within the Committee and then in plenary for adoption, and implemented by the Committee members with the help of other members of parliament in their districts. Missions of inquiry are conducted in areas and sectors dealing with HIV/AIDS and the ministries in charge of AIDS matters are regularly asked to appear in plenary and to answer oral questions. The results of field missions and inquiries are reported on in plenary.
Relations with other parliamentary bodies The Committee exchanges information with other parliamentary bodies during the weekly meetings of the enlarged Bureau, which comprises the Bureau of the National Assembly and the chairpersons of the permanent committees.
Relations with external bodies The Committee is in contact with the government via the Minister for Public Health and the Minister in charge of AIDS control.
Subjects dealt with The Ministry of Public Health has currently run out of certain drugs (ARV), to the distress of AIDS patients Adoption of a law on people living with HIV/AIDS
