Mandate |
Competence of the body regarding human rights - Human rights, petitions, complaints, suggestions of citizens, gender issues, HIV/AIDS problems, orphans and vulnerable children with HIV/AIDS, and other connected areas.
Its precise mandate is four years. It examines individual complaints and takes into consideration the views of public entities. The members of the Committee may individually propose legislation. Information on the Committee is provided in the information bulletin of the National Assembly and the Journal of the Republic. The Committee may monitor respect for relevant national and international norms having an internal impact. The body may examine matters regarding the human rights situation nationally and internationally, but its decisions lack any international impact. |
Membership |
The body consists of one Chairperson, two Vice-Chairpersons, one Secretary and five members. The members are selected through nomination by the parliamentary groups and the duration of their mandates is four years. |
Working methods |
The items are chosen and placed on the agenda through a consensual debate between the Committee's members on the concerns of and calls upon the body. The deliberations are public and the body is empowered to organize hearings and on-site inquiries, or to summon government officials. Decisions are reached by consensus and their follow-up is ensured by the competent bodies. |

The parliamentary body interacts directly with other bodies and committees of Parliament, particularly with respect to reports and exchanges of information. |
Relations with external bodies |
The body may maintain direct interaction with the Government, the National Commissions dealing with human rights matters, and non-governmental organizations. |
Subjects dealt with |
The questions which have recently come in for most attention from the body are domestic violence and the institution of the Child-Youth Parliament. This information has been published in the Official Gazette and a brochure has been issued on domestic violence. |
