The annual parliamentary event on the occasion of the 58th session of Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will be held in New York on 11 March 2014. The event, entitled At the crossroads of sustainable development and gender equality: the role of parliaments, is hosted by the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women).
The meeting will focus on tracking the progress made on the Millennium Development Goals over the past 10 years. It will also assess the role parliaments had in implementing the MDGs and holding governments accountable and discuss the place of gender equality in the next set of development goals. Particular attention will be paid to the situation of women in decision-making posts in the political, corporate, judicial and civil society sectors. Discussions will centre on national and international trends in this area and future strategies to transform these sectors into more women-friendly environments. The meeting will also assess the role played by parliaments in overseeing the implementation of MDGs from a gender perspective and discuss how gender equality should be framed within the sustainable development goals.
Finally, the meeting will provide an opportunity to contribute to the debates at the CSW whose priority theme this year is Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls. |
