Female genital mutilation was first mentioned in a resolution adopted by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in 1952. Since then, it has consistently been a cause for international concern.

UNIFEM Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence Against Women
- Established at UNIFEM in 1997, the Trust Fund was created by the UN General Assembly in response to the urgent call for action on these issues that emanated from Beijing. As of July 2000, the Trust Fund has mobilized US$ 4.3 million in funds from governments and private donors to support NGO projects addressing violence against women.
