All 605 candidates were elected for the 605-seat National Assembly of the People's Power (down from 612, see note) were elected. All candidates were members of the Communist Party. A record 322 women were elected, giving women the majority in the new legislature (53.22%), up from 48.86% in 2013.
On 19 April, the newly elected National Assembly of the People's Power elected Mr. Miguel Diaz-Canel as the country's new President (head of the Council of State). He replaced Mr. Raúl Castro, the younger brother of Mr. Fidel Castro who himself had led the country between 1959 and 2008. Mr. Diaz-Canel, 57, is the first Cuban leader born after the Cuban Revolution. He pledged to continue the path of the revolution.
Note:
The statutory number of members decreased from 612 to 605 due to the decrease of the population in the country. The electoral law requires one deputy for every 20,000 inhabitants.
