The 2014 elections produced a similar composition in the 150-member Legislative Chamber as before, with four parties reportedly close to President Islam Karimov taking all 135 directly-elected seats (see note). There are no officially recognized opposition parties in the country. The President's Movement of Entrepreneurs and Businesspeople - Liberal Democratic Party (UzLiDeP) remained the largest force with 52 seats, followed by Prime Minister Shavkat Miromonovich Mirziyoev's Democratic Party of Uzbekistan "Milliy tiklanish" which took 36. All parties campaigned on their traditional platform, focusing on business and farming (UzLiDeP) and traditional values (Milliy tiklanish).
The elections were the first to be held since the President - in power since independence in 1990 - signed into law a set of constitutional amendments in April 2014, adopted earlier by the Legislative Chamber and the Senate. The amendments stipulate that the Prime Minister is nominated by the winning party in the elections to the Legislative Chamber, instead of being appointed by the President previously. He/she can be dismissed by the President if both chambers adopt a vote of no-confidence by two-thirds of votes. Following the 2014 elections, the UzLiDeP nominated outgoing Prime Minister Mirziyoev (in office since 2003) as its premiership candidate.

The remaining 15 seats are indirectly elected by the Ecological Movement of Uzbekistan, a party dedicated to environmental protection that was established in 2008. |
