Note on the Senate elections
The statutory number of the Senate has increased from 61 to 62 in accordance with the 2015 Law on the Election of Senate Members: 58 senators (instead of 57 previously) are indirectly elected by Commune/Sangkat councillors while two senators are elected by the National Assembly and two others are appointed by the King.
One more senate seat has been added as Preah Sihanouk province will get two additional seats in the National Assembly at the next elections scheduled for July 2018, thereby increasing the statutory number of the National Assembly from 123 to 125. Article 99 of the Constitution stipulates: "The Senate consists of members, the number of which does not exceed half of all of the members of the Assembly."
As at 23 April 2018, there were 11 women out of the 62 members
- Eight women were indirectly elected;
- Two women were appointed by the King;
- One woman was elected by the National Assembly.
