BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 29 December 2015
Timing and scope of renewal Indirect election of 42 senators (seven per region) in the 63-member Senate.
Following the March 2009 coup, a transitional parliament was established in October 2010. It comprised the 256-member Transitional Congress (lower chamber) and the 90-member Higher Transitional Council (upper chamber). The statutory number of members of those chambers subsequently increased to 417 and 189 respectively.

The Transitional Congress was replaced by the National Assembly. The Assembly was elected in December 2013 and held its first session on 18 February 2014. Once the Bureau of the newly elected National Assembly had been installed, the Higher Transitional Council also ceased to function. Pending the installation of the Senate, the National Assembly assumed legislative power alone.

In January 2015, the National Assembly adopted electoral legislation - loi organique n°2015 - 007. The legislation specifies that an electoral college of the Senate comprises (1) Mayors, municipal and communal councilors, (2) heads of regions and regional councilors and (3) the Head of Province and provincial councilors.

In accordance with the transitional measures of the electoral law, the first Senate of the 4th Republic was elected by an electoral college comprising only the Mayors, municipal and communal councilors.
