Purpose of elections |
Following the proclamation of South Sudan's independence on 9 July 2011, the National Legislature was convened by Presidential Decree No. 10/2011 of 1 August 2011. |
On 1 August, Presidential Decree No. 10/2011 on the reconstitution of the National Legislative Assembly of the Republic of South Sudan was issued. The new legislature comprises all the members of the former Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly (SSLA), former members of the National Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Sudan elected from constituencies in Southern Sudan, and members appointed under Article 94(2) (b) of the Transitional Constitution of South Sudan. On 5 and 6 August respectively, the Council of States and the National Legislative Assembly held their first session. The former elected Mr. Joseph Bol Chan as its Speaker while the latter re-elected Mr. James Wani Igga, who had previously served as SSLA Speaker. |
