Voting system : indirect election
- The senators representing the territorial communities are indirectly elected by the local elected officials of their respective region.
- The senators representing the traditional and religious authorities, workers, employers and Burkinabè abroad are designated by their respective structure.
Seats that become vacant during the legislature are attributed to substitutes elected at the same time as the senators, unless the vacancy arises in the second half of the legislature.

- employment in public corporations or State-connected enterprises
- persons elected from the private sector are relieved of their functions during their parliamentary term.
