BACKGROUND
Dates of election / renewal (from/to) 2 December 2012
Purpose of elections President Blaise Compaoré's Congress for Democracy and Progress (CDP) won the elections taking 70 of the 127 seats at stake. It called on voters' support for the party so as to "consolidate democracy and the rule of law" under President Compaoré, who has been in power since 1987. The Union for Progress and Change (UPC, established in 2010 by former Finance Minister Zéphirin Diabré) took 19 seats and the Alliance for Democracy and Federation - African Democratic Rally (ADF/RDA, which was represented in the outgoing government) took 18. The remaining seats went to 10 parties which won fewer than four seats each. UPC leader Zéphirin Diabré and the Union pour la Renaissance-Parti Sankariste (UNIR-PS) denounced electoral fraud and irregularities.

On 31 December President Compaoré re-appointed Mr. Luc Adolphe Tiao (CDP) as Prime Minister. The new Government comprised the CDP and three smaller parties in lieu of the ADF/RDA.
