BACKGROUND

Purpose of elections The first ever indirect elections were held for 70 of the 100 seats in the newly created Senate. The 1996 Constitution provides for a bicameral parliament, comprising the National Assembly and the Senate, but the latter was only formed in 2013.

The term of the senators begins on the day of the opening of the ordinary session following the election. The Senate convenes for an ordinary session the third Tuesday following the announcement of the results of the elections to the Senate by the Constitutional Council.
