Purpose of elections The main opposition - the Czech Social Democratic Party (CSSD) - won 13 of the 27 seats at stake. It increased its majority in the Senate to 46 of the 81 seats. The CSSD criticized the government's plans to increase VAT and opposed pension reform. The largest party in the government coalition, the Civic Democrats (ODS), took four, holding 15 seats in all, while its coalition partners did not win any Senate seats.

The "Distribution of seats according to sex" above shows the breakdown for the senators elected in 2012: 5 women of 27 members or 18.52%.
After the 2012 elections there were 14 women in all out of 81 members or 17.28%.

The distribution of seats according to political groups and caucases in the Senate as at 28 November 2012 is as follows. :
- Czech Social Democratic Party: 46 seats
- Civic Democratic Party: 15 seats
- Caucus for the Reconstruction of Democracy - Christian Democratic Union and Independents: 9 seats
